What Coverage Options Are Available for My Watercraft or Boat?
There are many types of watercraft insurance to consider, with a variety of extended products to add to your initial policy. Some of the most common types of coverage provided with a basic watercraft insurance policy include:
Uninsured Boaters Coverage
If a boat collides with yours on the water and is uninsured, you could get stuck footing the bill. Uninsured Coverage is there to protect your finances.
Emergency Services Coverage
While healthcare in Canada covers a range of medical services, it does not cover the cost of an ambulance, dive team, or other services required during a boating accident. Emergency Services Coverage pays for these costs in the event of an accident, removing this worry from you and your family.
Medical Coverage
If you, a passenger, or another person is injured by your boat, your watercraft insurance pays for medical costs outside of provincial coverage. This amount is offered up to the limit specified in your Boat Insurance policy.
Liability Coverage
Liability protection takes the financial onus off of you if a passenger or other boaters are injured by your boat, or if your boat hits a structure or other property. You are not held financially accountable with Liability Coverage, up to the limit specified in your policy.
Pollution Coverage
Boats often carry more than just passengers, which means you are likely to have food, furnishings, electronics, and a fuel source onboard as well. All of these things can leak out into the water in an accident, polluting the waterway. Pollution Coverage protects against financial damages related to pollution and spills.
Loss of Boat Use Coverage
If you cannot use your boat or Sea-Doo for some reason, your Loss of Boat Use Coverage provides you with a loaner watercraft to ensure you can still get out on the water.
All Risks Coverage
All Risks factors in nearly any threat you could possibly face aboard your watercraft, from fire and hailstorms to vandalism and explosion. You can rest assured that you are financially sound in the event of damage or loss incurred as a result of dangers in your area.

Boat Insurance FAQs
Working with so many Canadian clients for boat insurance, The Standard Insurance often receives questions about what these policies cover, whether they are mandatory in Canada, and more. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive:
Am I legally obligated to have Sea-Doo insurance or jet ski insurance?
No. Technically, Sea-Doo and jet ski insurance are not mandatory in Canada. However, it is wise to cover these devices as there are many risks involved in their operation. From damage incurred while in storage to potential accidents on the water, a watercraft insurance policy will protect you against medical and repair costs, as well as liability.
Is it worthwhile to insure all year if I only boat occasionally?
Your boat may only see the open water for 3-6 months out of the year, but it is still at risk while docked or in storage. From inclement weather to vandalism, theft, and vermin damage, your boat could be made unusable even during the off-season. Having year-round protection ensures you are compensated for any damage to your water vessel, whether on land or at sea.
Do I need proof of insurance when I boat for it to count?
Insurance is not mandatory; therefore, you do not need to carry proof of insurance with you. Simply contact your insurance broker to file your claim in the event of an accident.
What if something happens to my boat while I am trailering or docking?
Your insurance policy, both in terms of collision and liability, should help cover the cost of damages that occur while replacing or removing your vessel from the trailer hitch or while docking. Be sure to check with your broker about how much coverage you have in these areas.
