Your Cottage Opener Checklist

It’s the most exciting time of the year –cottage and camping season is right around the corner! If you’re planning to open up your cottage this weekend, keep this checklist in mind to ensure a great start to the season:

Set up Services Call the necessary companies to ensure that your electricity, hydro and phone services are turned back on.

Check Insurance Make sure that all of your insurance documents (cottage, boat, trailer) are up to date and active.

Bring Tools It’s probably been a few months since your last visit, so be ready for some minor fixer-uppers.

Inspect Exterior Check the doors, siding, windows, roof, and gutters for any damage.

Pest Patrol Look for any signs of critter intruders, especially mice.

Air It out Get rid of that winter must and let your place breathe with some much-needed circulation.

Turn on Utilities Before you turn on any heating, cooling, plumbing or electrical systems, look for visible damage. Once those are up and running, turn the water on and check for any leaks.

Safety Check-Up Test your smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and flashlights and replace batteries if necessary.

Decked out Inspect decking and docks for loose boards and rotting wood.
